When Marianne Noble, a lady’s companion, visits the fashionable northern spa of Scarborough with her employer, she meets a man who attracts her instantly. However, a lady only just the right side of thirty with no dowry would have no chance with a man as prosperous and handsome as Jerome Rivers, so she accepts his friendship with alacrity.
Jerome is immediately smitten by the lovely and intelligent Marianne. He determines to win her, but when he tells her he is a little more than a mister, he fears she may not want the responsibilities that go with the title of duke. However, a courageous Marianne decides she will take a chance on love.
More problems arise when the shadowy character haunting Jerome begins to make more definite appearances and a vague threat nearly ends any chance of happiness they may have. With her husband in peril of losing his life, Marianne must draw on all her courage to combat the person threatening her future.

A thoroughly enjoyable Regency romance that was a little different. I have only read one other book by this author but admit to being intrigued. This story is about an h who is in service to a middle-class widow as a companion. She is a 29 year old spinster who isn't unattractive but it kept pushed down by her more blowsy and obvious employer. The H is a Duke but when he meets the h, he is holidaying as mere Mr Rivers in Scarborough. Although the h's employer has set her sights on the H for a fling, the h and H begin a discreet friendship because the boss is spiteful. It's quite an involved story but basically the lowly h ends up being the H's second wife. His first wife died in an accident whilst pregnant. The main characters return to his estate as newlyweds but there is a plot to kill one or both of them after many 'accidents'.It really was a lovely story and the H is very honourable for most of the story and he treats the h very well. The h is a really good person and just wants to do her best for the H.
+++Spoilers+++
Apologies to those who know me but what irked me beyond speech was the constant bringing up of 'carte blanche'. Now let me say with the h's lowly upbringing (daughter of a vicar and now in service) it would be a realistic offer BUT the H offered marriage. So once these thoughts and feelings about carte blanche were said and done, why oh why does the author have to bring it back up? The villain (a bit too obvious for my tastes) managed to create doubts in the minds of the H and h about each other with his insinuations about mistresses etc. Randomly the H tells his mother (the infirm Dowager) that he thinks the h would've been better off accepting carte blanche from him as she isn't coping. I wanted to throw my Kindle. No honourable H of that time (as this author wrote the H to be) would ever speak about these things with his mother and especially out of the blue!! Just annoyed me so much.
Other than that I really, really enjoyed this story

Noblesse Oblige edition by Lynne Connolly Romance eBooks Reviews
Lynne Connolly is a new author for me and I will certainly be looking for more of her work. The characters are all interesting and add to the plot, which moves along quickly and holds your interest with romance, humour and intrigue.
Marianne is the daughter of a country vicar with all of the attributes of a lady, but no dowry. She is employed by the rather brash widow Mrs Middleton and faces the embarrassments of being her companion with good grace. At the age of 29 she sees no other options for her future.
When Mrs Middleton spots Jerome Rivers and sends the mortified Marianne to deliver a message she hopes for some personal entertainment with this handsome new gentleman. He is appalled by her lack of decorum and initially dismissive of her messenger. However, contact has been established and romance starts to blossom between the unlikely couple, Marianne and Jerome.
When Jerome turns the pages while Marianna plays the piano beautifully, he opens his eyes and really sees her with all of her grace and elegance, even more obvious in contrast to the garish Mrs M.
As the book description says, she agrees to marry Mr Rivers and is shocked to learn that he is a duke. Friendship develops and new characters are introduced, bringing mystery and danger. Marianne must rise to the challenge of being a duchess and finds herself the victim of accidents that soon amount to more than coincidence.
I don't usually care for historical novels, but this one had very nice characters and a good story line. I enjoyed reading it.
I loved this story it was a fun read. A very entertaining story with believable characters, several twist and turns. Don't forget an unlikely romance between two people that blossoms out of another persons scheming.
There were places where the editing could have been better but the hero and heroine were enjoyable. The story line is a bit of this and that from Georgette Heyer but she is not writing any more books so...
Nice little romance story with a dash of intrigue. Felt very Balogh-esque in places, but was still very much Lynne Connolly's voice. Some of the things I very much enjoyed in this author's Richard and Rose series appear here as well. Marianne (a paid companion to an awful woman) and Jerome, a very rich noble, are a couple who find love early in the story. Their disparity in life-station at first causes some conflict, but they are in love and overcome it, at least with each other.
When they go to Jerome's family home, Marianne must overcome her own feelings of inadequacy in the face of Jerome's daunting relatives and the spectre of Jerome's dead, gorgeous first wife. And then there are the mysterious incidents. Incidents carefully orchestrated to prey on Marianne's newness and insecurity in her new life. Incidents that are trying to make it appear as if Jerome is still in love with his first wife and Even though Marianne feels unsure sometimes, she doesn't let it overwhelm her into mistrusting Jerome. The two of them are sure that someone is at the bottom of the strange things going on in the house.
I was able to figure out who the villain was and even the motive. That's ok as this wasn't even remotely supposed to be a mystery, but the threat to Marianne made for a nice little backdrop to the romance.
